Breaking through barriers for women and girls

Emerging Leader Interns

AAUW-PA’s Emerging Leader Internship Program recognizes the work done on this initiative at the Association level and reaches out to undergraduate and graduate female and male students, offering our state and branches an opportunity to increase membership and continue AAUW’s work for years to come.

How It Works:

  1. Appoint up to three (3) student (undergraduate or graduate) Emerging Leader Interns (ELIs) a year.
  2. Work with your board to offer internships in areas such as marketing and communications, membership, website development and management, newsletter production, program development and implementation, fundraising, or public policy initiatives. The ELI’s responsibilities should be assigned once both the intern and the board agree.
  3. Assign each intern a mentor who will help guide and encourage the intern’s work.
  4. Help your Emerging Leader Interns to join as student affiliates (see also the SAF/E-SAF descriptions)
&nbpsp; NATIONAL DUES STATE DUES BRANCH DUES TOTAL
Undergraduate student at a C/U partner school FREE FREE for the first year; half price after that YOUR BRANCH’S CHOICE FREE plus branch dues
Undergraduate student at a school that is NOT a C/U partner $17* FREE for the first year; half price after that YOUR BRANCH’S CHOICE $17 plus branch dues
Graduate student at any institution $49* FREE for the first year; half price after that YOUR BRANCH’S CHOICE $49 plus branch dues

    * Your branch may choose to pay the ELI’s national dues.

  5. Showcase publicly what your branch intern accomplishes over her/his year of work.
  6. Help your interns continue their membership. At graduation, use the Give-a-Grad-a-Gift program to give your intern a free at-large membership after graduation. There is no limit to the number of such gifts any current member can give.

Emerging Leader Interns (ELIs), both women and men, are an important part of keeping the mission of AAUW moving, and they learn about leadership on many levels.

AAUW-PA can have up to three (3) interns. An Emerging Leader Internship is a great opportunity to craft an internship that fits with your career goals. These interns are encouraged and expected to do the following:

  • Have a vested interest in AAUW’s mission to advance “the equity of women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.”
  • Work closely with a mentor on the AAUW-PA board and have regular correspondence with this mentor.
  • Supply the mentor with a status update to be presented at board meetings (ELIs are not required to attend board meetings).
  • Assist the Younger Member Chair with Student Affiliate recruitment, intern recruitment, college partner recruitment, etc.
  • Assist other board members with various tasks, depending on the interests of the ELI and on the focus of the internship (i.e. someone looking to gain experience in membership would work closely not only with the Younger Member Chair but also with the Membership Vice President).  Possible opportunities include bylaws, public policy, membership, writing for the Keystoner, event planning, program development, marketing, and finance.
  • Become an active voice for AAUW in his or her community (college or otherwise).

Yearlong Emerging Leader Internships run from July 1-June 30 annually. ELIs are expected to affiliate with AAUW if not already affiliated; the state waives AAUW-PA student-affiliate dues for an ELI.
