Let’s Read Math

October 4th, 2007

The Let’s Read Math program was developed by Dr. Claire Passantino of the Makefield Area PA Branch.

In its simplest form, an adult reads one of the Let’s Read Math books with a group of children, and the adult and helpers organize a math-related activity for the children afterwards. Dr. Passentino has developed work books for the math activities — appropriately titled Fun Books. Both the story books and the fun books are available through the program. Some are available in Spanish.

The program is suitable for small groups of primary children, say 4 or 5 children, through a group of 20 or so. Of course, multiple groups can be run simultaneously. It has been used in after school programs, in enrichment programs, in Family Nights at primary schools, and as a Saturday activity in public libraries. Local volunteers will present the program for the third summer at the YWCA of Chester County Summer Enrichment Program.

Philadelphia Branch 2007 Achievement Awards Luncheon

October 4th, 2007

You are cordially invited to join us in applauding three remarkable women who will each receive our AAUW Achievement Award for 2007 at a Luncheon to be held in their honor at the Union League of Philadelphia on Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Now in its 16th year, the AAUW Achievement Award Luncheon has traditionally turned a spotlight on a woman who through her professional and/or volunteer efforts has exemplified the AAUW mission: to enhance equality for women and girls through advocacy, education and research.

This year, for the very first time, our Award Committee has elected to honor not one, not two, but three deserving awardees – each representing a different discipline of endeavor. They are:

  • Terry d’Alessandro, Market Chief Executive Officer, Sovereign Bank
  • Sara Garonzik, Producing Artistic Director, Philadelphia Theatre Company
  • Dawn Staley, Head Coach of Women’s basketball, Temple University and Assistant Coach for the USA Women’s Basketball Olympic Team.

Those who know our 2007 outstanding achievers will agree, we are sure, that the three women selected have excellent qualities in common. They have superb leadership skills, are dedicated to their work and the community they serve and are excellent role models for future generations.

Corporate support for this event will include two categories: Angels @ $2, 000 (includes a table for 10 at the Luncheon) and 10 complimentary beverage tickets. Sponsors @ $1,000 (includes a table for 8 at the Luncheon). These contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. The names of corporate Angels and Sponsors will be included in all of our promotional and media material, as well as in the invitations and program for the event.

Your participation in this AAUW Achievement Award Luncheon will help us recognize our three outstanding achievers, this year and will help support AAUW’s local programs. Please call 215-545-4903 or email to: staff@aauwphila.org to answer any questions about the Luncheon.

Sincerely,
Loretta Bové Crowell, Davorka Sabljak
